Skye Campsite Wins Top Award

Skye Camping and Caravanning Club Site has been named the AA’s Scottish Campsite of the Year for 2012.

The site, in Edinbane on the Isle of Skye, received a four pennant rating to land the award.

AA Inspector, Ewan Ross, wrote in his report: 'It’s a peaceful site and an ideal base to visit many tourist attractions in the area.

'It would be remiss not to comment on the quality of the amenity block in particular and site facilities in general, all of which reflect the owners attitude towards achieving excellent standards to meet customer expectations.'

The club’s franchisees Nicky Sellier and David Weller said, 'We hope this award will encourage campers to visit our site - it’s located on the shore of Loch Greshornish and offers beautiful views, yet it is still close to many local attractions for all to enjoy.'

Meanwhile Bellingham Club Site, in Northumberland, has been upgraded to five pennants as were Eskdale, Teversal and Troutbeck Club Sites.

It takes the total number of Club Franchise Sites with AA five premier pennants to four.

Yeomans Buys Gelert

The camping and outdoor leisure brand Gelert has been bought by Jason Granite, who last year bought the Yeomans outdoor goods retail chain.

Granite originally made his name as a distressed debt trader at Deutsche Bank, and acquired Gelert for an undisclosed sum early in January.

Gelert had been in some difficulties after losing the contract with their biggest customer.

Gelert had sales of about £30m a year and supplied outdoor goods to retailers including Argos, Halfords and Tesco.

Granite expects the deal to bring synergies between the two businesses.

Yeomans bought in July

Granite bought the 82 store Yeomans chain in July last year and is intending to trade the business long-term.

In the past the retailers he has bought were frequently liquidated, including Envy and Faith Shoes.

However, Granite drafted in former Go Outdoors head of buying and merchandising Chris Boardman to strengthen the management soon after buying Yeomans, and is keen to develop a stable of outdoor brands.

The purchase of Gelert is a further step along that route.

Major Change in Outdoor Retail

Outdoor goods retail is going through a period of major change with Blacks also being sold to JD Sports.

Fast-growing businesses such as Go Outdoors have also become increasingly powerful in this category.

New UK National Parks Visitor Passport

Merrell and UK National Parks have launched an updated UK National Parks Visitor Passport to inspire a new generation of outdoor fans to get out and discover the British countryside.

The outdoor footwear and apparel specialist will be working with the UK National Park family by distributing 'visitor passports' to Merrell customers throughout the UK.

It will be done via in-store point of purchase materials and promotion through their website and social media platforms. They are also offering the chance to win some top of the range Merrell gear.

'All 15 National Parks offer a diverse range of dramatic and stunning scenery and we're delighted to help enhance the adventures of outdoor enthusiasts whilst tracking their progress using the Visitor Passports,' said Emily Carr, marketing executive at Merrell.

Carl Lis, chairman of the UK Association of National Park Authorities, added, 'We are delighted to be working with Merrell to encourage more people to get out and enjoy the countryside.

'More people than ever are staying at home to enjoy what the UK has to offer and whether you want to relax and enjoy the tranquility, join in a family event or get into some adrenaline-filled activities then there’s something for everyone in your nearest National Park.'

The Visitor Passport allows guests to collect attendance stamps from each of the 15 National Parks as a lasting memory of the unique adventure and discovery experience.

The UK National Parks are spread across England, Scotland and Wales and offer a diverse combination of mountains, meadows, moorlands, woods and wetlands.
