What is Hydrostatic Head?
Most Waterproof and Breathable fabrics have micro pores which are large enough to allow moisture vapour through, but not large enough to allow water droplets through.
This will stop rain penetrating but will allow perspiration to escape.
However, this type of waterproof fabric will allow water to penetrate eventually if the pressure is high enough, and this is measured by the hydrostatic head.
A hydrostatic head of 1000 means that the fabric will hold a column of water 1 metre high without allowing any water to seep through the fabric.
The higher the hydrostatic head, the more waterproof the fabric is.
