When  preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money.  Then  take half the clothes and twice the money.

Rucksacks & Backpacks

Rucksacks & Backpacks

There is a large range of rucksacks and backpacks available on the market, at various price points.

These range from about 50 litres up to 120 litres or more and includes military bergens, all of which are ideally suited to hiking and backpacking.

Rucksacks which are 45 litres or less are generally classed as daypacks.

Adjustable Back Systems on Rucksacks

Modern designs mean that a rucksack is more comfortable to carry than ever.

Most rucksacks from about 55 litres and over have an internal aluminium frame and will also have an adjustable back system so you can adjust it to suit your height and build.

When carrying a heavy load on your back, it is important that the rucksack sits in the right position.

Your shoulders should NOT carry all of the weight.

Adjust the back system so that most of the weight will be carried on your hips. A good rucksack will have a thick, padded waist belt to make this more comfortable.

Ventilation Channels on Rucksacks

Good padding and ventilation channels on your rucksack will ensure that you won’t get a build up of perspiration. This will make it more comfortable and will help to prevent chafing.

Pockets & Dividers for Versatility

Side pockets mean that you can ensure that frequently used items are readily accessible without having to unpack the whole rucksack.

Some backpacks have 2 main compartments with a zipped divider for maximum versatility, and some have a built-in rain cover for protection in wet weather.
