Charles Edward Smith started working at the Romsey shop in the early 1900s, when it was a pawn brokers. He bought the business from his employer (Binnings) in the 1920s and named the shop Chas E Smith.
It remained a pawn brokers, and Charles Smith was well known around Romsey as Uncle Chas.
During the latter part of WW2 the shop started to sell Government Surplus, but it wasn’t until the early 1950s that the pawn broking side finished and the shop became a purely retail outlet.
After the end of the war Chas’ youngest son Rex became more and more involved in the running of the shop.
Slowly it evolved, building up the range of goods to include work wear and general country wear, and then all kinds of outdoor leisure wear.
Rex’s son Mike took over the shop in the early 1980s and introduced camping goods into the range.
The shop no longer exists and this website is run by Mike’s sister Carol and her husband Ian.
Ian was a keen member of the Scouts and Cadets at school, took the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards, represented the school at orienteering and archery events, and has always enjoyed camping, fishing, shooting and other outdoor pursuits.
Carol was a very keen rider, entering her first gymkhana at the age of 9.
Together with other members of the family, some of whom are in H. M. Forces, they bring a wealth of outdoor experience to share with you through this website.
